The Mysterious Benedict Society, Trenton Lee Stewart

Some smart kids take a test to see how they smart they are, and it turns out they’re smart enough and nice enough to win the prize of infiltrating an Ominous Institute and finding out what the super evil scary man is plotting!  That’ll teach you to be smart and nice, kids!  Anyway, they meet a nice, nice man with narcolepsy, and he tells them how there is an evil, evil man (who also has narcolepsy, as it turns out) trying to control everyone’s minds, and they have to go infiltrate his school and foil his plans.  They all agree to do this, and then they have all sorts of adventures at the school.

Meh.  It was fine.  A lot of these books, I regret not having read as a child, but in this case, I don’t think I would have loved it that much as a kid either.  Oh well.

  • haha… I had to look up what “narcolepsy” meant.

    • Narcolepsy is so strange. There was a girl in my high school who was always falling asleep in class, and getting into trouble over it, and then it turned out she was narcoleptic. Excellent excuse for not paying attention. 😛

  • I felt the same way about this one, although there are kids who come into my library that are passionate about how very much they love the series. I thought it was too long and meandering, and a bit too contrived. But that’s just me! :-p

    • I can see how kids would really like this – smart kids outwitting the grown-ups and foiling evil plans. It’s appealing! Are the other books in the series any better, or did you not keep reading them?

I absolutly loved this book! I think the 2nd book is better though. I am counting down the days ’till the 3rd book comes out!

    • Hmmm…. The second one is better, you say? I am a total sucker for claims like this! I may have to investigate the second one after all…
