Something on Sunday 10/29

Happy Sunday, friends! The weather in Louisiana has settled down to be beautiful at least for a few days, so my main Something on Sunday thing is that I can finally walk places again. It fulfills so many needs at once! I get my exercise! I have time to think quietly! The sun blondes my hair! It’s the best!

The other thing is that I’ve started rewatching Black Sails with my sister, and I noticed in the pilot that Miranda and Flint have this book on their shelves.

Black Sails S01E01 (I) Book title: De iure belli ac pacis (On the Law of War and Peace in English) by Hugo Grotius

(I had never heard of this fellow Grotius.)

Well not TWO DAYS LATER, I was reading this book called Inventing Human Rights, and who do you suppose was among the earliest writers to conceive of the notion that all humans had a set of natural rights? (If it’s not Grotius this story sucks.) HUGO GROTIUS!

All roads lead to Black Sails is what I’m saying, and that’s my other Something on Sunday. Link up yours below!

  • I have never watched that show, but I suspect I should since all roads lead back to it! šŸ™‚

My Something on Sunday is that I am still riding a football high from yesterday. My alma mater has zero losses and was number five in the country before yesterday, and my son’s school knocked off number four in the country. Plus, the number two team lost yesterday too. It was a good day.

    • Yayyyyy! That’s so awesome!! Congratulations! My Saints have been doing a little better — although our last game was weirdly a nailbiter considering we were playing THE BEARS — which has been nice.

  • Jeanne

I’ve ordered the first DVD of Black Sails, entirely because of your enthusiasm for it. Also you have improved my week because I got a new Southern Review and have been reading it.

    • YAYYYYY oh Jeanne I hope you like it. Remember that the first season is a little rough — there’s this rapey subplot early on that would have put me off the show entirely had I not received (very true!) assurances that the show moves beyond that kind of thing. Oh I really hope you like it Jeanne.

  • Now I really just have to watch Black Sails. I don’t see any way around it.

I wish you were in Boston so I could make you go see the play I saw this week. It’s called A Guide for the Homesick, and it’s a new play and it’s AMAZING. If it ends up being huge and famous and in New York (which I hope it will) you should see it sometime.

    • Ooooooh, thanks for the rec! I am always on the hunt for awesome theater recommendations, and I try to get up to New York once a year.

  • My brother got me a season of Black Sails on DVD for my birthday a few years ago and I watched like 2 eps. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Idk, Iā€™m usually into pirates

    • Can I suggest that you watch more? You are the boss of you, of course, but I do feel (and I am not alone in this) that the early episodes of Black Sails are far weaker than what the show will become. It gets really, really good if you can plow through some of the rough stuff at the start.

  • I watched the first episode of Black Sails and wasn’t super into it. I’m starting to wonder if I need to give it another go.

I have been thinking about you a lot recently. I’ve had cause to rethink my stance on spoilers after watching S1 of Peaky Blinders. It was a gorgeous show to look at and I found the story interesting, but OMG, so stressful! I’m thinking I might have to dig up spoilers if I’m going to press on with the next two seasons.

    • I meeeeeeeean. Look, I liked Black Sails from the jump because PIRATES! but it is definitely the case that the first episode (and the first season overall, really?) is not what the show will become. Here’s my standard Black Sails disclaimer thread; maybe that will help you decide. https://twitter.com/nonmodernist/status/864201407091679232

I FEEL YOU on Peaky Blinders. Even looking up spoilers, I found it too stressful to continue with. I liked it a lot a lot, but oh my God the suspense was killer.

      • Would you suggest skipping the first season of Black Sails? Or does it lay important groundwork?

Interesting you found Peaky Blinders still too stressful, even with spoilers. I’m not sure that bodes well for my continuing to watch it.

  • Kristen M.

I’m so glad it was Grotius.

    • Hahaha, indeed? Are you a big fan? I started reading his book and it’s awfully early modern — lots of “and it may be argued that na na na na na but da da da da da disproves it. And it may be argued that blah blah blah” ad infinitum.

      • Kristen M.

LOL, no. However, my hubby totally knew about him which made me feel uneducated. One day we will have read everything, right?

  • Stefanie@SoManyBooks

Hmm, all roads lead to Black Sails or is it all roads lead to Grotius? I have never watched Black Sails before. Should I?
