Vonnegut had a story to tell, based on his experience in WWII, regarding the horrors of war. I think Slaughterhouse 5 has to be read in that context. The surreal nature of the book fits perfectly in a world where those who are not participating in the actual fighting are out of sync with those more directly involved.
