I think the protagonist had been taught about Socrates in school. I knew about Socrates and the gadfly thing when I was that age! (The title is, now that you bring it up, totally pretentious. And nonsense to compare the events of this book to Socrates.)

No, no, no, I don't like snotty and know-it-all protagonists. They irritate me, and this makes me sad because I really wanted to enjoy this book. I have had it on my review shelf forever and a day, and I loved the idea of it, but now it seems like I wouldn't really have a good time with it. I met the author, and she was really, really nice, and I want to give the boo a chance at least, so I will be reading it, just not nearly as soon. And people should not sneeze on one another. It's gross and rude.

I love campus novels and books about academia, so I guess my tolerance has to be pretty high. But I do like to see the cleverness in action, and not have to take it on hearsay. Poor you being sick. Glad it was a long time ago and hope it will not happen again any time soon.
