I think maybe I started one of her books once (and I watched Chocolat), but yeah, she also has struck me as being a middle-of-the-road author as well.

I have four books of Joanne Harris and I haven't read any of them!
Gentlemen and Players, Five Quarters of Oranges, Chocolat and Blackberry wine. Since you said it's good, I'm reading her books soon!

I vaguely remember liking Chocolat but I thought this one was better. I hadn't read any of her books for a long time but I picked Gentlemen & Players for my book group last year (probably based on your recommendation!) and we all liked it. Her books tend to be good for discussion. I also liked Blackberry Wine, but mostly because there's lots of foodie stuff in it.

I wish I could remember this better! I read it several years ago now, and enjoyed it without feeling the need to be evangelical about it. But what does it matter? You rocked book club, that's the point! :)

This was the one that turned me off of Joanne Harris. I enjoyed Chocolat, despite how twee the whole thing was, and actually liked Blackberry Wine, but I felt like her books turned unpleasant somewhere around this one.

Jenny: Queen of Book Club. Sounds like a fantastic bookish evening!

I haven't read anything by Joanne Harris and haven't even SEEN Chocolat. I haven't really felt like I was missing out on anything. Guess I was right?

I've never read Joanne Harris, but I've had her on my radar for a while. Actually, maybe I have read her. I have a vague notion of a book about a painting of a chess game and a king and a knight or something. Obviously, it didn't make a huge impression.

I have had this one on my shelves for the longest time, and haven't read it. I also typically don't enjoy those dual storylines all the time, and especially when I like one part much more than the other. I can think of a lot of books that have done this successfully, but it sounds like it was not done here. I will still read the book, and try to keep an open mind, but will be informed by your comments. And go you for rocking the bookclub meeting!!

Read this a long time ago and really loved it, I think more for the sensory nature of much of her writing than anything else. I think you are right about the dual plot thing though, you do often get more caught up in one than the other. she also has quite a penchant for women with mysterious pasts:-) thanks for sharing
