I kind of liked the movie adaptation of The Jane Austen Book Club (yay Emily Blunt and Maria Bello), but it's not an entirely faithful adaptation. There are some parts that are, but the movie definitely tried to gloss up things - made characters younger, left out really intriguing backstories. I listened to the book on audio cd and enjoyed it.

Another Karen Joy Fowler I really must get my hands on. Was this book published before or after We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves? She's writing at an amazing rate whichever it was.

Are they? I have been wanting to read Bernice McFadden for a few years now, and have balked because American historical fiction isn't usually my thing. But I should give her a try!

You know, I saw the movie of that, didn't care for it, and completely wrote Karen Joy Fowler off, which now seems very unfair. I want to give the book a try sometime -- Fowler's so funny and her books are so well-observed.

Who doesn't? :p

(I may have overplayed the cult angle? As central as it is to the plot, there are large sections of the book that don't talk about it at all.)

This one does sound very fascinating! I love reading books that blend fact and fiction so well that you end up wanting to believe that the book was all fact. Bernice McFadden's books are like that. Looks like I have one more author to check out.

This sounds like a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed your analysis of it. I've only read one book by Fowler, The Jane Austen Book Club, but I did actually enjoy that quite a lot, even though I suspect that is not a very popular opinion. I had never really considered that Fowler might have a penchant for the quirky or weird in her writing, but that certainly appeals to me. Your description makes this sound an awful lot like something Kate Atkinson might write, and she is one of my very favorite writers. I had already flagged We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves for future reading, but I think I'll add this to the list as well.
