I’ve had this one on my radar for some time. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I don’t really LOVE music myself (I mean I listen to it, but I don’t follow trends or seek out new artists or anything). However, I really love the way authors write about music – it’s so poetic!

I read her first book and felt meh about it, but maybe I should give this one a go. I do love musical themes to novels (I recently read a fascinating nonfiction book about modern jazz cowritten by a musician & music journalist: Jazz in the bittersweet blues of life). Agree with you re: the covers! It’s refreshing for the US one to win. hehe

I think I own a copy of this. I should really try to read this one. I’ve been hearing about it on and off. My concern is that I don’t get music references and I hope that won’t leave me lost.

I have almost read this book so many times, then I find myself thinking “oh, WW2, I want something less depressing.” If I start thinking of it as a “music book” I’ll probably get to it eventually.

(Also, I read embarrassingly few Canadian authors considering that I LIVE HERE.)

I prefer to think of the better cover as the Canadian cover…
Nice review. It reminded me about how much I liked the book, and that Canada Reads was on this morning, and I need to find out what happened to this book in the debates. It might be wild – this isn’t even the best book in the competition this year, but I can see it winning.

I adored this book. I read it when it was short-listed for the Orange Prize and I had pretty low expectations as it seemed like yet another book about WW2, but actually it had a really fresh perspective. Glad you enjoyed it too!

I bought this basically when it came out…. STILL have not read it! I have the American cover and I quite like it. First I have seen the other.

I agree, the American cover is much better–design and color choices. I’m definitely adding this one to my list.
