I cannot hear the word afterparty without thinking of R. Kelly, and that is unfortunate.

I haven’t read that many zombie books but this certainly sounds like a different take on the genre. And I admit, I’ve never read anything by Daryl Gregory, so should check him out!

Admittedly I’ve read few, but all the talk about zombie books was enough to put me off them, until The Uninvited Guests by Sadie Jones, so whilst that’s a different sort of different to what you’ve described here, I understand where you’re coming from. I’d say that, and, somewhat ironically given this post, Eat The City by Robin Shulman are my ‘reconsider’ books, the Shulman because I didn’t think I’d find foodie non-fiction so interesting.

I LOVE zombie fiction. I don’t know why, I don’t particularly care for other scary things, but I’ve got a zombie addiction. I really dig it when authors put a different spin on the undead and this sounds SO GOOD. I’m adding it to my TBR right this second. For serious. The Goodreads TBR even, not the fake TBR that I claim to have most of the time.

I suffer from genre prejudice for genre fiction in general, especially sci fi and mysteries, despite the fact that there are like a million and one exceptions to my “don’t read this” category (A Wrinkle in Time! Gaudy Night!). Mostly it just means that I only read things in these genres is someone else tells me to. And I’m OK with that. I have a purely camp love of zombies (B movies, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), so wouldn’t be likely to pick this up either. I’ve never heard of Daryl Gregory, but he’s now on my list!

My son is a big zombie fan so I may well mention this book to him. I absolutely adore what you say about the universe making a person eat her words. THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME and not enough people protest about it. See, this is just one reason why I love your reviews so.

I didn’t like zombie books, and then a friend gave me a copy of World War Z, back when it was first published. It was good, and had some good satire in it. Like most good satire, it was topical, so now it’s out of date and no one would like the book as much as I did at the time (I didn’t go see the movie).
Until I started watching Supernatural, I wouldn’t read or watch anything that had ghosts or ghouls or any kind of horrible creature. I am easily over-stimulated or frightened, and prone to nightmares.
As you can see, though, in both cases, the humor is the saving grace.
