White as default was a big topic of conversation at WisCon this year, but no one seemed to have anything terribly useful to say about it. N.K. Jemison noted that even when she used race-marker terms to identify a character as non-white, readers continued to read the character as whatever race they themselves are. It seems to most of us a good thing that readers identify with characters.
