Interesting! I haven't read many books of this stripe (mostly because I fear they'll head into self-help territory, I think), but I did enjoy THE PSYCHOPATH TEST a few years ago. I think I may see if I can get this one through my local library. Lovely review!

I am so very glad you enjoyed it! I thought her discussions about the patients and the medical ethics that surrounded their cases was wonderful. But like you I feared the memoir bits were... well, a bit much, in comparison to that suffering. I feared it was me being British and cynical so you have no idea how relieved I am to know that you reacted similarly! Fortunately they only represent a tiny fraction of the text. Love your review.

I love books like this! When I was on my Brain book itinerary, I read about other cases in which brain malfunctions took exotic turns, and in some cases, what was done to cure or improve the situations. Two that were very good: Phantoms in the Brain by V.S. Ramachandran and Sandra Blakeslee and The Body Has a Mind of Its Own by Sandra and Matthew Blakeslee (mother and son).
