This was a great episode, and the Pulitzer Prize Nominee or Twilight Zone Episode game sounds like fun. I think I would’ve had a better than 50/50 chance since I’m a big Twilight Zone fan and saw most of the episodes you described. 🙂

I also really liked Summerland! Actually, it’s the only book of his that I’ve ever liked. It’s so different from his adult books that I’d still recommend it to people who normally hate his writing (but still like YA fantasy, of course).

I feel similarly about Michael Chabon. I’ve read the three you mention. There are two others, though, that I did like, and one I loved. Give Mysteries of Pittsburgh a try. It was his first — a coming of age novel of sorts. I loved it. It’s also shorter and a good summer read. If you have a penchant for geographical novel-reading, combine it with The Perks of Being a Wallflower for the full Pittsburgh experience. I also liked Summerland, his YA fantasy novel revolving around a kid who wants to be better at baseball and a magical game. These two are both VERY different from the three you mentioned, so much so as I often forget they’re by the same author. Also, re: Dickens, Bleak House was the one that took me away and the one that brought me back was Tale of Two Cities, which I adored and then went on the read just about everything (I DON’T recommend doing that. I’m looking at you, Sketches by Boz). I feel I should give Bleak House another chance, but the title isn’t doing it any favors. Great podcast! I would be curious if you would talk sometime about authors where you’ve gone on a binge of their books — what makes it happen, when does it work, when does it have tragic results (like making you hate a book you used to love)?

I wanted to call in (though not live, so no one would have answered the phone, right?) and suggest to Julia for Jane Austen to maybe just give her some time? Not knowing age and how many years it has been, I am finding delight in books that appalled or bored me in my (ahem) early years.
As for me? I have given up on Kazuo Ishiguro after 3 books – though I LOVED the first read, by the third, I didn’t want to finish and it is due to style, I think. My second chance author will soon be Steinbeck. Will attempt East of Eden after having poor luck and satisfaction with almost everything he has ever written ever.
