I've been saddened and frustrated by all of the events out of Missouri, but I think what upsets me even more are the reactions of the people in the region where I live. I will look at an article from the local news and 99% of the comments are so vile and hate-filled that it beggars belief. These are the same people who are so caring and promise to pray for accident victims when the local news posts stories about car wrecks. They are all kindness for some things and then the other things they post (anything having to do with the Ferguson stories or political, i.e. the president) are absolutely sickening. I've had to stop reading the comments because it chips away at my faith in humanity. And now that I've grumbled about that, I'm off to check out the lovely book links you have listed.

Ugh, same here. I was so glad that I got the new Sarah Waters book this past week, or I'd have been truly miserable. :(

I like links! Also, I found the Book Review essay super-duper irritating, and even the last paragraph a bit too patronizing. Oh my, so literary fiction is "fundamentally exploratory," and not an easy pleasure?THAT must be because 90% of what is dubbed "literary fiction" is, by the weirdest coincidence, written by white men. They are so, so complex and layered that it's truly remarkable that such a high percentage of literary fiction is concerned with their sexual problems and existential angst.

Excellent links, thank you. I need to follow John Scalzi, though I haven't read his books. Between Ferguson and James Foley, I have been so sad this week - and seeking comfort (if not escape) in books.
