Great discussion! My dress that doesn’t fit is Juliet Marillier. I’ve read a couple of her books, and they’re well-written and I enjoyed them, but for some reason I have no interest in picking up the sequels.

For those who can’t get into Jasper Fforde and Terry Pratchett, I would suggest trying their YA books before giving up on them entirely. I find their humour brilliantly funny but in their adult books it gets exhausting. Personally I think Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series is the best stuff he’s written. (But I haven’t made it through very many of the adult Discworld books, so I can’t really judge!)

Jane Yolen sent you an email!?! How awesome is that. I’ve never been in contact with a favorite author of mine- not even gone to a single reading or book-signing. Well as for her works they are hit-and-miss. I loved them as a kid, as an adult a lot just don’t quite work out for me. I do like Susan Hill, but I’ve only read one book of hers so maybe my opinion doesn’t count on that.

🙂 I’m more interested in the comments than the review! I liked the setting for Snow in Summer, but agree that the conclusion was hurried and less satisfying. I wanted to like it more than I did. But what delights me about the comments is that not everyone adores Jason FForde and Susan Hill. Am I indulging in some derivative form of schadenfreude?

People keep telling me I’ll love Jim Butcher, and I have to keep telling them I read the first three Dresden Files books and wasn’t blown away. Then I feel bad for not being blown away by something everybody says I should like.

I am also voting for Susan Hill. And there are loads more whose names/titles escape me as I type. I can quite see how this book ought to work really well for you. Isn’t it frustrating when a book you are excited about ends up a let down? I do find that most annoying.
