Before I went to NY the first time, I spent a lot of time poring through subway maps and stops and the like. Then I went to NY and used only the subway. But between the two terminals in Penn Station, there is a whole atrium pointing to different train stations - NJ Transit, LIRR, Amtrak. Since my brain didn't yet have any information on these train maps, I resolutely ignored those and only used the subway. At one point, I started using the trains, and oh my god, nothing has confused my poor head more than this new map added to the maps in my head. Now, I know enough about NY subway and train maps to guide friends and families visiting NY (and also show off my knowledge, ha) but unless you travel by subway/train daily or do a religious study of the MTA system, you're probably lost there. And even if you know it all, you'll still get lost. Or you'll have mind battles with friends/family on the best way to get somewhere - everyone's going to have their own answer to that.

If you think the signage on the New York subway is bad, try negotiating the New Jersey highways -- it's even worse. And signage here in New Hampshire is just nonexistent. You're just supposed to know where you are, by instinct or something.

I worked for Deborah Devonshire (the last Mitford) on the Chatsworth Estate and lined the route at the late Duke's funeral with everyone else, in full bakery girl garb, WITH A STRAW BOATER. I was so sad when I heard she'd died. She was amazing, a real character, and she made Chatsworth what it is. She visited the farm shop one weekend while I was at work, to show Cliff Richard round (he was doing a show in the grounds), and I was like, "Fuck Cliff Richard! IT'S A MITFORD SISTER! WHAT DO I DO SHIT WHAT IF I SAY THE WRONG THING OR CALL HER YOUR MAJESTY OR SOMETHING?!" So I did what any sane person would do: I hid in the walk-in fridge until she was safely through the kitchen and away. For fifteen minutes. Just me, a shitload of coleslaw, some pastries and about a hundred different joints of meat for the deli. Good times. I think I MIGHT have spotted her before, actually - she used to come in incognito quite regularly, in her wellies and old coat, to wander round and sometimes surreptitiously sign her own books and replace them on the stands. *happy-sad sigh* :D

Some great essays on that YA thing, thanks. I enjoyed the rage, and the Petri piece got at something my husband and I discuss sometimes, that SF/F (and the accompanying YA), done well, is modern myth. Same thing.
