I get soooooo anxious about reading and potentially reviewing family memoirs, for the reasons you give. It's like, what if I don't connect with this person's intense struggle to cope with their parent's passing, or their own fight with cancer, or their shitty childhood? Too much pressure. I always end up putting them off for a looooong time.

Oh I just read my first Hardinge during the read-a-thon! I was not sure about it at first, but it won me over by the end. I'm not rushing to read more of her though; it verged on too precious for me (like what you mentioned in the first third: lots of whimsy). Whereas I tried Valente this year (The Girl Who Circumvanigated Fairyland etc: have you read it?) and fell head over heels in love, where I expected it to be twee due to the title. So clearly I as a reader move in mysterious ways. ;)

You have me curious about Jerusalem but my favorite part of this post is definitely the line:

"I checked the end of Brando Skyhorse’s Take This Man and was pleased to discover that his mother and grandmother are already dead."

You're amazing!

Yes, I have a stack of reviews that are still on the pending list. I need to do one of thse posts. I have to pick up Jerusalem soon. I sort of struggled with another book by Guy Delisle (maybe Pyongyang) but it was just a bad time for me then.

Hahaha, no sorry :D Couch hiding would not be necessary even if you didn't like it. But I'm thrilled that you did and can't wait to hear your thoughts on Cuckoo Song.
