I was about 1/3 of the way through before I figured out the “thing”, and I was pleasantly surprised at how little it affected the fact that this was also a really entertaining story. Honestly, not my favorite of Scalzi’s work – if you liked this one, you should definitely dig into his backlist, because he’s written some great stuff.

I haven’t read this book yet, but Scalzi did something similar to the thing in THE GOD ENGINES, only with the protagonist’s lover rather than the protagonist themself, and it made me really happy.

I have both audio versions sitting waiting for me to get to them. I listened to Redshirts a few years ago and still love it. You have definitely piqued my interest even more now. I may just have to move it up in my audio queue!

So that’s what this book is about! I’d seen it around but never stopped to pay attention. You make it sound pretty good. Maybe one I get through my current little pile of SFF I’ll start a new pile with this one!

I have this on audio and need to get to it soon, although I’m a little worried it might be confusing in that format. BUT I know the thing about gender – Audible published two versions of the audio, one with Wil Wheaton narrating (tha’ts the one I have) and another with a female narrator (can’t remember who). So I guess you’re supposed to feel either different or the same based on what gender you “think” the narrator is? I guess I won’t understand until I listen … but I will report back after I do!

Love Redshirts! I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend it!

The funny thing is I read the novella and was convinced certain “giveaway” pronouns had been used. Went back and sure enough, I was wrong – nothing gender-specific. I had prescribed it as I was reading.

I just read this one, and I didn’t think about it until you mentioned it, but now that you have, I guess I’ve noticed what you mean about Chris. i am of the generation that remembers the character Pat on SNL.
Also, he wrote this novel without using semicolons. Said he felt he’d gotten too dependent on them.
And Redshirts is great; I think you’d like it.
