Ugh, iniquity. Yeah, there were a few dishes my parents made when I was a kid that contained jicama, and I always wanted to spit it out. I probably mostly did spit it out, or eat around it.

Just one! What a pity! Honestly, it's fun having more. I have two sisters I was born with and one I acquired later in life, and I would be very sorry to have to do without any of them. They're lovely humans.

If you like Garcia Marquez, perhaps you'd be even MORE likely to like this than I was. I feel that I liked it in spite of its Marquezian qualities, but probably someone like you would like it all the better for those similarities.

Jicama! OMG, I hate it too! My mom loves the stuff and when I was a kid she'd always try to force it on me. Blech. My sister would eat it claiming she liked it but I'm not sure she actually did. Family dynamics in general can be weird but dynamics between adult siblings? I'm glad I just have one! My husband has an older brother and sister and I am forever astonished by their interactions. I do like Garcia Marquez though so I hope you can forgive me for that. Anyway, the books sounds pretty good.

Not off topic! Very on topic and thank you for telling me because sometimes I feel like I am all alone in not loving Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Everyone loves him so.

Yes, do read it! I do not usually like a family saga, and I thought this one was just great.

Me and jicama: I don't know. Truly. I don't know. I have never been able to tolerate it. There's something about the texture I just absolutely can't handle.

Yeah, I've heard that comparison too. I haven't read The Twelve Tribes of Hattie and have never been particularly drawn to it, so I can't speak to that. The Turner House is definitely really good -- and I think it very smartly focuses on three of the twelve siblings, rather than trying to talk about all of them.

I...I don't know. Like, I really can't try different jicamas to test this theory, because the very thought of them makes my skin crawl. I am cringing away from my computer screen right now. The texture. I can't.

DO read this book though! It's so good!

Somewhat off topic, I went to an event by Andy Millar recently, he also hated One Hundred Years of Solitude. I've read Love in the Time of Cholera, it made me angry.

This book in comparison sounds much better.

From the description, this book reminds me of Twelve Tribes of Hattie too. I've seen the cover and never felt the need to pick up the book. Since you and WP loved the book so much, I'm going to add it to my tbr list. Now that summer vacation's here, maybe I can get to it soon.

What's up with you and jicama? :-)

I have been very reluctant to read this one because it has been compared to Twelve Tribes of Hattie, which I was very disappointed with because the format just didn't work for me. It does sound like it is done better than the Hattie book. I generally love having multiple narrators but some authors don't do that too well. Sounds that this one triumphs with that format so I will (cautiously) give this a try.

I've seen several previews of this book (always mentioning it is a "debut novel"), all of which said in effect, "You need to read this book." You have convinced me, though :)

I had never heard of jicama til I moved to Texas, and now I'm addicted to it. I wonder if you just haven't met the right jicama? That's also my theory about people who say they hate cats.
