I’m not at all surprised. My AP American History class got as far as the Vietnam War, and even up to the Clinton years, but prior to that, the latest any of my history teachers got was World War II and just BARELY that. We always ran out of time.

I know! I was so shocked by it that I felt naive for being so shocked. :/

I’m awful at American history. I really am. But I feel like I should at least have a good grasp on the things we did that were BAD. Otherwise it’s irresponsible. (But you get a pass. You are Canadian. You only have to be responsible for knowing the bad things Canadians did.)

I was totally ashamed I didn’t know about it! In our defense, recent history that happened when you were tiny / before you were born can sometimes be the hardest history to learn about. The adults all think everyone already knows it so it doesn’t come up, and the history classes don’t teach it because they’re busy getting you through WWII.

I KNOW that is a whole insane thing. There’s a movie called Pirate Radio that deals with this very issue, starring I believe my imaginary boyfriend Don Cheadle. I haven’t seen it but my sister says it’s fab.
