In reply to Alley. I know, it really is. Especially because I had read so many reviews absolutely raaaaaving about it! And when I read the first half of it I could totally see why, and then -- yeah, it all turned into nothing. :/

Okay! It’s not pretty prose in the way that — I don’t know, Marilynne Robinson is. It’s just very thoughtful and interesting prose, in my opinion, and even if the author doesn’t fully play out the questions she raises, I still think it would engage you. (Maybe?)

When I first heard about this book via Goodreads, I thought my boyfriend would be more into it than I would, because he likes idea-driven fiction a lot and is specifically interested in questions of consciousness, including as related to AI … but your “beautiful prose at the expense of other book elements” comment makes me think I might like it more than he would. Maybe he and I should both read it!

Ugh that is so disappointing that the book is SO GOOD for the first half and then peters out. That’s almost more frustrating than if it’s just meh the whole way through

Hmmm…. I am all about epistolary (or epistolary-ish) novels, but your “but” had me just about convinced to give this a pass–and then you go and suggest that I specifically read this. The last time you did that in a blog post, it was a very good decision, so I’ll give this a look-see, with your caveat about the end in mind. I’ll try it when I’m in a pretty prose kind of mood.

I think the writing helped me hang on with this one, but I'm definitely with you on the second half falling off. I wanted so much more from the connections and purpose of everything, but it just didn't come together.

At first, I thought this was nonfiction. It sounds like it could have been a great novel and it does sound very appealing. I’ll probably take a look at it but I’ll keep in mind the minus aspects.
