Hahahaha, I don’t think any of the Tolkien books did! I think they’re thinking of the many Tolkien knock-offs we’ve loved slash endured over the years in high fantasy. Frankly incest is almost always a deal-breaker for me in continuing to read a book. Ick.

The comments — yeah. I never read the comments. The bad possible outcomes of reading the comments are way more numerous than the good. :p

Yeah, see, and that’s I think how most people respond when they suddenly are asked to start using a new name (like a married name). It doesn’t have to be a big issue for anyone. You are being awesome AS USUAL.

The Strunk and White is maybe my favorite. It would be my clear favorite if the Hamilton cast recording didn’t exist. 😀

I’m having a hard time remembering to use the preferred pronoun for one of my students this semester because it’s plural, and when I’m at work–where for 20 years I’ve been expected to be a paragon of grammatical virtue–it’s almost impossible for me to refer to a singular person out loud by a plural pronoun. I have apologized for this and asked “them” to be patient with me while I try to get it right.

Such an excellent round-up that I will be late for work, because I kept clicking on the links. I am still giggling over The Toast, and trying to figure out which Tolkien book included incest.

But oh gods the comments on some of those pieces made me sad & mad in about equal parts. So much ugliness and ego instead of real engagement or discussion.
