					<description><![CDATA[I am both fascinated and repelled by Franzen. Some of what he writes is smart, and some makes me feel so off-balance. He spoke at Kenyon several times before the commencement address mentioned in the article, and he was thoughtful and gave good answers to some very difficult questions (including a kind of rude one about how it was going to be to make a commencement address at the college where his dead friend had made a famous one...he said, gracefully, that it was one situation in which he would be happy to be considered second best). I think he doesn&#039;t care very much about being liked or seeing other peoples&#039; points of view, but he does care about telling everything like he sees it.]]></description>
