I am both fascinated and repelled by Franzen. Some of what he writes is smart, and some makes me feel so off-balance. He spoke at Kenyon several times before the commencement address mentioned in the article, and he was thoughtful and gave good answers to some very difficult questions (including a kind of rude one about how it was going to be to make a commencement address at the college where his dead friend had made a famous one…he said, gracefully, that it was one situation in which he would be happy to be considered second best). I think he doesn’t care very much about being liked or seeing other peoples’ points of view, but he does care about telling everything like he sees it.

I’ve heard that the Meyer gender swap is almost entirely cutting and pasting pronouns and names. I’m not sure why you would ever take the time to do that … except to milk every damn cent out of something.
