I don’t know about this. Recollect that Hamilton’s experience of slavery was Caribbean, where the slavery was incomparably brutal, and where slaves were the very large majority of the population. In other words, probably most of the people Hamilton knew – he was a very poor kid, remember, a charity case – were black, and he routinely saw those people treated with horrific brutality. Hamilton was a practical guy, and must have known the political impetus wasn’t there for abolition, but he seems to have pushed anyway. And l am guessing he hated slavery more than we do – having seen it in all its horror.

To your hashtag that Hamilton does a lot of random financy things: I got that he didn’t want a mob on his hands and basically he needed quickly figure out a way (aka magic money program thing) to pay the soldiers that did all the hard work of getting shot at so they don’t get their pitchforks out. That was all I got. Also, the program was a 12-stepper so you know it’s serious business.

No, no, y’all. He really hated slavery. He says it a lot, and also, recognized at a certain point that it was definitely not happening in the current conditions, and that he was throwing away political capital that he could spend more effectively elsewhere.
