Yeah, for the longest time I was unaware of the connotations of the word gypsy, but now I also use Romani instead. I kind of enjoy dysfunctional family memoirs, since my own was also not the greatest, but some of them can feel a little exaggerated, or taken out of context. This sounds like an interesting memoir, though, in all honesty, the concept of marrying girls off when they are so young makes me shiver.

YEP it is the right thing to do. I remember when I realized what the etymology of "gypped" must be and was horrified with myself for having used it. :/

That makes sense! But I guess I like it when the focus of the memoir isn't on the person's family, but rather on what they've done themselves that's interesting.

Hahahaha, yeah, I've quit them too. Mostly! Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant was a fun exception, and that wasn't so much a family dysfunction memoir as it was a, like, Health and Caretaking Memoir. Is that a separate category?

Oh yes, I have that one on my list. It looks very depressing indeed, but then, the history of the Romani people has been so full of people treating them like crap that it'd be hard to find a non-depressing history of that. I AM READY (just not this instant minute).
