YEP it is the right thing to do. I remember when I realized what the etymology of “gypped” must be and was horrified with myself for having used it. :/

That makes sense! But I guess I like it when the focus of the memoir isn’t on the person’s family, but rather on what they’ve done themselves that’s interesting.

Hahahaha, yeah, I’ve quit them too. Mostly! Can’t We Talk about Something More Pleasant was a fun exception, and that wasn’t so much a family dysfunction memoir as it was a, like, Health and Caretaking Memoir. Is that a separate category?

I read them pretty occasionally now, and almost always because I’m interested in what that kind of life would be like. The two I’ve read this year are this one and The Ordinary Acrobat.

If you do remember the title, let me know! Was it Bury Me Standing? That’s the one that I think I’ve encountered most often.

Oh yes, I have that one on my list. It looks very depressing indeed, but then, the history of the Romani people has been so full of people treating them like crap that it’d be hard to find a non-depressing history of that. I AM READY (just not this instant minute).

I KNOW, I need to find a big long list of memoirs that I’ve read and make a proper taxonomy. Right now I don’t feel like I’ve adequately plumbed the possible categories.
