Ahaha, had to include the Father just for that! :D I like the sound of this one and was planning to read more Erdrich, she's so prolific! Maybe I'll read this one next though I was also planning to go back to her early books. As you can see I'm not sure where to go next. But I loved The Round House even if it was often a difficult read but so worth it unless you're triggered by rape discussion and depiction.

Your description of this book and where it ultimately comes down -- hope, forgiveness, peace -- is articulated so much better than I was able to do. I'm glad you liked it :)

The only Edrich I've read is Tracks which I can't remember the details of but I remember enjoying

I've only read one of Erdrich's books - Shadow Tag - and I really hated it. I would be open to trying more of her because I thought her writing was great but that book really bummed me out.

I've only read a short story by Erdrich (and loved it). I should definitely read her novels too. Not sure I want to read this book - depends on how much the kids suffer :D but glad to read that you loved this.

I have read a few books by Erdrich. Tracks was pretty good. Tales of Burning Love was ok. And I think I have read Bingo Palace too. I am in the very long holds queue at the library for this one. Erdrich has a bookstore here in Minneapolis and is really popular. She can be kind of hard sometimes because different characters tend to appearances across her books and sometimes you get backstory and sometimes you don't. It never really affects the story at hand but there is the niggle that you are missing out on something.

I've never read Erdrich before either - I'm glad to know, judging the comments, that I'm not the only one late to the party. I guess I've avoided her because I had the impression that her books were all really heavy? Which makes no sense, I know. I've become much less wussy in my reading over the last couple of years, really I have!

Just to be clear... I don't *enjoy* their pain and suffering - just find it makes reading more compelling/powerful. I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression. ;)
