Interesting that you follow the Costa awards. I considered reading a few from last year because the variety was so… varied, and I liked that. But then it being so varied was also daunting. I’m going to have to rethink again.

I think I know what sort of humour you mean. It has its moments but can be difficult. Sanghera’s on my list to read; glad to hear his book’s good.

I believe this is the first of your reviews I have read. Your writing style took me a little bit of getting used to, but it was delightful! haha, you are quite funny yourself for someone who doesn’t like comic/humorous novels.
I also was not aware of the Costa Prize, so thanks for teaching me something new. I hope you keep your A+ record of reading Costa winners. You have the right to maintain that record however you wish. 😉

I think I share your feelings about comic novels. I certainly feel that way about comic movies, which I almost never like, but haven’t thought as much about comic novels. I do love humorous nonfiction though.

Everything you said about comic books is spot on, especially that they don’t really humanize their characters well. That’s true for many comic movies too. I do want to laugh reading / watching them but I don’t want to cringe too. This one sounds good – hadn’t heard about it before, but I have seen quite a few movies along the same line and I’m a sucker for this kind of story.
