I want to read this book, but at the same time I don’t. EDL get to march in my town every year and as much as I’m for free speech it makes me so angry. I’ve not actually heard that narrative racists have created around Muslim men, but a) I live in town that is mostly white and b) I live in one of the most thinking liberal towns in the UK (thank god) so – what with my white privilege – these things pass me by. Which really probably means I should definitely read this book.

Sounds interesting. But thinking that I would get really angry and depressed just reading this book. I was in London in the late 90s and it was such a liberal, open, fun place to be in. I would hate to think that that’s all changed now 🙁

Interesting post and comments! I feel a little better knowing that I’m not alone in the complete and total inability to understand these people and what they could possibly be thinking. I would really love to know what goes on inside their heads (disturbing as it may be).

Yeah. It’s not nice. Re Scotland: maybe Scots – poor and not-so poor – voted to remain because they reckon the EU trumps the Commonwealth? That is, because that way there was somebody further up the foodchain to whom they could appeal whenever they got pushed around?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that men are the WORST. Can you imagine how peaceful our world would be if there were less men around to murder, rape, and do other horrible things? Of course women do awful things too, but at far lower rates. So in all honestly, men are literally the bane of our existence. They are a vile, putrefying stain on our society! lol Yes, I know, #NotAllMen, but I think I have a point.

Anyway, this book sounds real fu*king fascinating. I’d love to read something like this because I’d probably learn so much. More likely than not, though, I’d end up depressed and without any hope for society as a whole.

We’re having this problem in Australia at the moment (I mean, we’ve always had a racism problem here – I personally believe we are one of the most racist countries in the world despite touting ourselves as super multicultural, but anyway). Our recent federal election has seen the surprise comeback of a female politician from the 90s, Pauline Hanson, and her ‘One Nation’ party.
In the 90s she was all about badmouthing Asian people, claiming we would be “swamped” by them and that Australia should pretty much stop them from coming into our country.
Now she’s all about the Muslims (seriously, some of her recent speeches sound like she got all her speeches from the 90s, crossed out “Asians” and scribbled in “Muslims”). She is seriously uninformed, ignorant, and generally just a horrible human being.
Everyone thought her political comeback was a joke, but apparently there are enough people in this country who feed off her rhetoric to give her three (or maybe four) seats in our senate. The majority of her supporters are middle-aged white men.

I think the big issue with these sorts of political parties is that they feed the fear perpetuated by the media, and then feed off the fear to put more fear into the public – it’s like the circle of life, but should be called ‘the circle of racist political parties’.
