I admire authors who can do that too! I think oftentimes authors want to make an “unlikable” character so they go way too far in the other direction, and have a character who’s so one-note terrible that they’re really boring. But characters who are morally complex and interesting are the bessssst.

No, I think that’s right. There are all these assumptions and overused narratives that get applied to people in all sorts of marginalized groups, and because people outside of those groups keep hearing those narratives over and over, it’s very easy to fall back into them in ways that are insensitive and often harmful. Which is why I’m all about #ownvoices.

Yes just imagine what kind of awesomeness could exist in the comics world with more writers from all sorts of marginalized groups. SOUNDS GREAT. *sulks*

See, yes! I could have been fine with it if we’d seen something from Jessica prior to her conversation with Luke Cage. Like maybe some conversation with a friend where she said she never wanted a child but actually (etc etc etc). That could have been okay. It’s just that we see NOTHING from her, EVER, to indicate that she wants a kid, and then this is the thing she says to Luke Cage. It rubbed me the wrong way. >:(

The baby thing, I didn’t really think anything of because I know there are some women who don’t even consider whether or not they want a child until they find out a pregnant, and then deal with their feelings or decisions then. Buuuut… it’s annoying that she wanted to keep it. Not all women would find pregnancy a happy surprise, and the character of Jessica Jones seems like she’d be one of them.

This is so true for male writers writing female characters, even the relatively aware ones, even the ones who are trying. And it’s so gross. (I’d imagine it would also hold true for privileged writers writing about marginalized characters generally, but I don’t want to say that definitely.)
