I didn’t know Tamaki had a new book. Hooray!

It’s interesting that she was so one-sided in her portrayal of the unkind kids. I was going to point out her work on Super Mutant Magic Academy, but that is actually by JILLIAN Tamaki, so not a good example. BUT in that book, there are a lot of characters with a lot of dimension!

Agreed on the rant! But this does sound pretty great anyway. Also, I’d be totally on board with more genres embracing the secondary-character-gets-their-own-novel thing!

Ooh, I need to go add more Tamaki into my reading. I didn’t have a huge success with This One Summer but I was probably too quick to judge there.

This is the first I’ve heard of Mariko Tamaki. Always good to hear about yet another good author! And, may I please borrow the term “assholery”? I do love it.

This sounds rather great, despite the Angry Feminism Minute part of it. I like Mariko Tamaki’s work too.

Too bad this one had to have an Angry Feminist Minute. One would think given what the book is about, there would be a bit more insight and sympathy. That shouldn’t be asking too much.

I was a skinny blonde bitch. (At least, people told me I was a bitch with disheartening regularity when I thought I was just giving an opinion.) I was in college before it dawned on me that people were reacting, not just to my very opinionated and not so tactful character, but to the fact that l couldn’t gain weight. So the “skiny bitch” crack – thanks a lot, Megan Traynor – still bites, and it’s still mean. I don’t like it when ANY oppressed group turns on another group with name calling and social cruelty, but it always does seem like humans have this tendency to become the thing they hate.
