This sounds fun! My last book about music was a bit of a bust (it turned out to be a poorly organized collection of previously published essays), but I’m definitely interested in giving the topic more of a chance. I’m also intruiged by the social aspect of this one. Fasincating!

As a recovering snob, I think I would like this book.

Also, it made me kind of sad when I realized that everyone kind of universally hated Crash. I like that song. Maybe I was/am not as snobby as I thought?

I love the term ‘music stupid’ and I count myself one. After humiliating my friends on numerous occasions as a teenager with my total inability to differentiate cool and good music from uncool and crap music, I sort of gave up with the whole thing, it seemed to require a huge amount of effort and reading of NME I wasn’t prepared to invest.

Now I find that I use a lot of songs teaching English as a foreign language; I’m learning quite a bit myself but also regularly making my students weep at my poor taste heh heh what do I care? The glories of being old.

I have also never listened to whole albums by many important 20th century bands – Prince, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, just any of them. I know the bands my parents had records of (e.g. Dionne Warwick, Carpenters) and then I have a solid understanding of 90’s Christian bands, followed by 90’s and 2000s movie soundtracks, followed by bands I discovered using Pandora and other methods of serendipity.

Definitely need to check this out! In high school I was the person who knew “everything” about music, but then I got to college and figured out I knew only about 1/3 of general music knowledge… so, perspective. Anyway, I think this would be right up my alley, so thanks for reviewing it.

Also, who would you put in place of Lebron James in the coolest sports person category? (I’m largely sports-stupid, I admit.)

I'm trying to think of examples cos I SWEAR they are there, but all I'm coming up with is the characters from High Fidelity, who are wonderful to read ABOUT but I don't so much want to read a book about their thoughts on music. As hilarious as Barry's/Jack Black's thoughts might be.

I’m super glad I managed to overcome the “you’re popular, I hate you” thing — sometimes a popular thing genuinely sucks, but very often the popular thing is super fun! And then you get to squee about it with lots of other excited people, and that is the best!

In reply to Shannon @ River City Reading. ENJOY. I think you will enjoy it. It's truly like a book-length Grantland article. Or a Grantland article series. Why is The Ringer website so terrible and inaccessible? I love their content but I need it to be delivered to me in a less shitty format.
