Man, that story about the PTA president and the couple that tried to frame her is pretty crazy. I think I read too much STFU Parents, but it does seem like there are people out there that will deal with perceived or minor affronts to their children with outsized animosity and rage.

an in-womb what now??? Oh my. I have never read any of this man’s work (is this the man who wrote Atonement?) but THIS sounds like silly and interesting.
Woah, I read more of that article than I expected. He’s not too bad a fellow…and also, this book really is real. And the fetus narrator speculates about what it’s like to have his father’s rival’s penis inches from his face??? 0.o

In reply to Jenny @ Reading the End. It's sounds like we had different opinions of Everfair. I've got a review that'll get posted this weekend or thereabouts, but essentially I thought it was trying to cover too much ground in one book and ended up feeling rushed.

But they feel foreign to me too, and I *am* a suburban white girl–whatever they’re describing, it isn’t anything close to my world. (I have doubts that it’s anyone’s world.) I think culture might be a more helpful lens than race, I guess, because there are millions white American girls who wouldn’t recognize anything in those books–we don’t all belong to that culture that purports to be portrayed, if anyone does at all.

Doesn’t it? I liked the notion of Atonement reasonably well — the ending was amazing — but the book was too long-winded to keep my interest, I’m afraid, and the same was true of the two other McEwan books I tried. I think he is just not the author for me.

I was reading the article about the PTA mom while my friend was visiting, and we just shrieked about it for like twenty minutes. She kept saying “But what did she DO to make them so mad?” and when the article finally revealed the PTA mom’s offense it was like …. huh. That’s it?
