I am about halfway through Wishtide now and I'm enjoying it, it is entertaining though a little melancholy too and just the ticket for this stage in the school term (tired, need something not too strenuous). Still, the nods to Wilkie Collins, Mrs Braddon et al. are slightly pointing up its lack of depth. And there are a LOT of fallen women. I feel slightly battered over the head by the Women Had a Crap Deal in Victorian England message. But I would definitely read any more books in this series that Kate Saunders might care to write, and I'm going to be recommending this to my mum, for instance. Still undecided about FCOTWF though.

Sorry, Jenny, to totally hijack your thread. :) Have a scone.

Well, Helen, I would certainly be interested to see whether you are as bothered as I am if you do pick it up! But try Wishtide first, I think that is a safer bet.

I am curious because I had an immediate and rageful prejudice against Five Children on the Western Front which probably means I should try and read it but I really don't want to. And I am not only the sort of person who becomes wrathful at inconsistencies but I feel exactly as you do about authors taking over characters, Lory, I think they should really love and know them. So that doesn't really bode well for me and FCOTWF. However, I have ordered Wishtide from my library so maybe Saunders will beguile me...

I picked this up at B&N and almost bought it but then couldn't decide if it was quite what I wanted at the time. It sounds good enough to get on a future trip though!

No, you probably won't notice if you're not a diehard fan, and you might like the book. But being one myself, I could not get over the inconsistencies, which made it look like Saunders was not a diehard fan either - and that is just not right, to take over some other author's books without knowing them backwards and forwards. Okay, end of rant.

I can't remember where I stopped with the Peabody books - it's like a lot of long mystery series, I'm really into them for a while but then there are all these other books to read and I get distracted. What are your favorites?

I've really been enjoying the Miss Fisher's TV show (which I recently found out was a book series - yay!), so the comparison makes me excited about this series. Even with some differences, I think it shares some qualities I enjoy :)

That sounds good! I'm a mystery fan, have been since I began reading. For some reason, series don't bother me. I can't read mystery series right in a row, though. I space them out, and it'll be months before I read the next one, just because I've got so much to read! Thanks for reviewing this and putting it on my radar.

I don't read many mysteries at all! I can't think of more than a handful I've read, actually. Are the Dan Brown / Robert Langdon books considered mysteries? I think so.
Anyway, I will be reading at least 1 this month for the #DiverseDetectives readathon! The ones I'm looking at were written by women. So I appreciate that you picked a Kate Saunders mystery.

P.S. I like how you disclosed this was a review copy. Mind if I borrow your wording? I may tweak it a little, but you said it so well.
