I am completely unsurprised that you didn't love Master and Commander, but also pleased that Whiskey Jenny is willing to try another. The second book is totally different, almost entirely on land and all about meeting and wooing ladies. And good news for Whiskey Jenny! I believe M&C is the most detailed when it comes to parts of ships and whatnot. There's still lots of ship terminology, but it's less important than what's happening on the ship, and I can usually piece together the highlights without understanding the details. If they were all like M&C, I wouldn't have continued reading after the first few.
