In the published version, the waitress’ name is Carrie. It seems like she transitioned to female and is happy working as a waitress. The suggestion is that she and Buddy might have time to get to know each other.

Ugh, I’ve been meaning to read Daryl Gregory on your recommendation for yonks, but I’ve never gotten one of his books on my list. Is there one I should start with?

Ooo yes, I like this idea and am a FAN of a ton of plotlines coming together, especially when it seems like there is absolutely NO WAY the author is going to make it work. The Jasper Fforde books are a lot like that (if you’re looking for others).
