Looks like it's being published soon. Our book supplier has a date of 2018 on it and nobody has bought it yet, but it also says it's in stock, so it's just now happening. It's not actually my purchasing area, but we're flexible....

It's called Meetings With Manuscripts, and it's my new favorite book of 2017. And last night I was reading it and found a humor grenade DWJ left in a book! I may have yelled aloud. :)

INTeresting! Ethiopia does seem to loom very large in European imagination, with the whole Prester John idea they had for so long, so I'm not unduly surprised. What's the fabulous new book about manuscripts? It sounds familiar!

I'm kind of wondering if Black and British even came out in the US? My library doesn't have it, and my closest academic libraries don't have it either so I am thinky emoji about it. :/

Me too! I think this author does such a great job of it -- it's obvious she's done a living ton of research and work to uncover these folks and what she can of their life stories.

Neat! JUST LAST NIGHT I was reading this fabulous new book about certain medieval manuscripts, and in a chapter about a Spanish book from just before 1000, the author shows a map of the world and points out that the Ethiopia part is shown as larger and nearer to Spain than Greece is, and says that 10th century Europe was much more influenced by African culture than people realize. My medieval lit prof in college said something along those lines too, when a student argued that medieval societies were insular and racist (and therefore not worth studying, I think was her idea).
