I mean, look, guys. At least Elon Musk lost thirteen billion dollars yesterday. Is that money fake? Yes. Will he probably get it all back pretty quickly? Yes. Is money made up? Y E S. Nevertheless, I am basking in his suffering. And like, the $13 billion dollars is actually probably more impactful, but what feels more satisfying to me is that he’s paying for Stephen King and LeBron James to have blue check marks they don’t want. That is just. That’s. It’s like, my guy, you don’t have to keep inventing new Ls to take. You could just do what all the other rich idiots do, which is get in fights about where your yacht is going to be berthed to show off how long it is. That would probably be more fun for you, my guy!

I’ve been meaning to do this links round-up for approximately ten thousand years, so some of these links are a little older. You know what? Who cares! They’re still terrific!

Resy won the reservation wars. Here’s how.

“Despite the Black-film streaming guides that proliferated on the internet during last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, the streamers themselves have been ill-equipped to fully articulate the wealth of important Black titles that are available.” The Black Film Archive is here to help.

While we’re on the subject of Black cinema, Slate and NPR have teamed up for a very cool project called The New Black Film Canon.

“Sudden, dramatic hair changes, she says, ‘are a big part of who I am.'” A profile of the lady who invented at-home rape kits, and how, uh, that’s all going.

Eurgh, the world is a hellscape, including TikTok.

This is a fascinating story about Black journalists who were hired to train Nigerian reporters in the 1980s.

A really stellar breakdown on SFF world-building, by TV writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

“Vitriol is a precious resource. Spend it wisely.” Steven Hyden contemplates the decline of the negative review. (He’s talking about music but I suspect it applies to other spheres too.)

“The hardest stunt I ever pulled off.” Stunt people are so cool.

This is a fascinating article about transnational corporate espionage.

Oscars-related things I am mad about: Jamie Lee Curtis winning over Angela Bassett or Stephanie Hsu. The Whale.

On the trope (ongoing!) of the disabled villain.

It has made me SO happy to witness Abbott Elementary come for the throat of charter schools.

A woman from Leicestershire devoted her energy to trolling Madeleine McCann’s parents on Twitter. When her involvement in the online harassment came out, she killed herself. Now her son is trying to find meaning (for himself and others) in her life and death.

Swarm dehumanizes Black women.

FINALLY, a deep dive on whump fic!!

The always-wonderful Linda Codega takes us inside the dysfunctional, sexist, unsafe offices of Wyrmwood Gaming.

Dara Horn asks if the focus on Holocaust education is, paradoxically, making anti-Semitism worse.

“There was a woman who was Irish, which was not her job, but, my God, she was good at it; she owns a pug who apparently is a successful working actor, which was also not her job.” Caity Weaver went on a package tour for millennials trying to make friends.

And Lauren Oyler went on a GOOP cruise. My cup runneth over.

Have a wonderful weekend, friends! Or if you do not have a wonderful weekend because the world is dumb and bad, at least know that you have not lost thirteen billion dollars in a single day. Yay!

And THEN as if that weren’t enough, the Thirteenth Doctor was announced to be A WOMAN and I just, wow, it just was really, really a lot.

David Brooks wrote an insane article claiming that cultural barriers are more significant than structural ones, and also ?sandwiches are confusing to uneducated people? look I don’t even know. Anyway, this response about faking it is really good.

Some Spiderman comics to read now that you’ve seen and loved Spiderman: Homecoming.

Lindy West asks: Will men stick up for me?

“We can love a thing and still critique it. In fact, that’s the only way to really love a thing.” Daniel Jose Older on the whiteness of book publishing and how to change it.

Just some solid gold internet content right here.

Okay, I guess in addition to Serena Williams and Pete Sampras, Andy Murray can take up residence in the smallish tennis player corner of my heart. This is nice.

Tony Kushner is writing a Donald Trump play. I should have seen this coming. I can’t wait for it to come out, you know, twenty years from now.

The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler turns fifty.

I have been hearing about this webseries adaptation of Middlemarch QUITE A LOT lately, and although I have been burned by some non-LBD webserieses before, I’m inclined to give love a chance. This decision is in no way influenced by the fact that I’ve recently convinced two friends to watch Lizzie Bennet Diaries and am working on a third. (One of them is sending me text updates and it’s magical.)

The brilliant Clare McBride offers an overview of furry history over at Syfy Wire.

And something really marvelous to end on: The Millions has released their second half of 2017 book preview. HEAVEN.

Lindy West recently departed Jezebel for GQ, a move about which I said, “Huh.” But it all seems to be gold so far; here she is on the “BASICALLY SEX CHRISTMAS” represented by the new standards for consent in California colleges.

JK Rowling, presumably missing the days when she got to fuck with us regularly, took some time out of her busy schedule to fuck with us last week with the following confusing tweet:

Cry, foe! Run amok! Fa awry! My wand won’t tolerate this nonsense.

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) October 6, 2014

I let the internet get on with its regularly scheduled dithering, and waited for the result. The internet unscrambled it in the end: “Newt only meant to stay in New York for a few hours.” Thanks, internet. I knew I could depend on you.

Roxane Gay talks about the price of black ambition.

Everyone always wails and screams about children’s and YA fiction being too dark already, so I don’t know what would be so different about publishing more nonfiction for children and young adults. This NY Times article is kind of dismissive of nonfiction for younger readers, but I think it’s a huge gap and we need to fill it.

Speaking of YA, The New Statesman‘s Elizabeth Minkel argues that the anti-YA crowd often tends to lean in the direction of viewing reading as a solitary activity, whereas the YA fans tend to think of it as a group thing. Interesting theory!

Neil Gaiman talks about how to become a writer, and emphasizes the importance of having lady writers on Doctor Who. And he also thinks that “fake geek” trope is bullshit.

In other representation news, apparently Jill Soloway and Jenji Kohan had a fascinating discussion about diversity in writers’ rooms at the New Yorker Festival, and I am dying to see a video or read a transcript. If anyone has seen such a thing, please link me! So far it’s been cast in clickbaity clash terms, and it may have been very clashy. But I would like to see the full thing.

Let’s give some love to Cuba for their team of doctors helping with the Ebola outbreak. Way to go, Cuba!

I wanted this to be an article making fun of Anne Rice, because I am an uncharitable person and I find Anne Rice deeply annoying. Instead, it’s like really positive on her. Whatever.

Women in Clothes is an amazing website (and I’m sure the book is also super amazing!) where you can see what dozens and dozens of women have to say about clothes, what their clothes say about them, and what they see when they look at other women’s clothes. You can also take the survey yourself!
