You should buy the Hamilton cast recording: A links round-up

If you haven’t yet listened to the Hamilton cast recording, you are not living your best life. It’s out today for digital download, and you should buy it. As of this posting, you can also stream it on NPR First Listen.

Did you miss my linguistics nerdery? Great news: Here’s an article about how language shapes our brains.

If you like Return of the Jedi but hate the Ewoks, you understand feminist criticism.

Remembering to use a trans person’s preferred pronouns is no harder than remembering to use a woman’s married name: An appeal for good manners.

A high fantasy novel without incestuous subtext.

Awesome Person Sofia Samatar interviews Awesome Person Sarah McCarry about monster girls.

I heave enormous sighs every time I read about the Stonewall movie: Learning about Stonewall was my way into intersectional feminism, way back in high school, and I want there to be an awesome movie about it. But want must be my master. Here’s the wonderful Meredith Talusan on trans erasure.

Also: Stonewall is apparently terrible. A real stinker.

I gazed blankly at the news that Ta-Nehisi Coates is going to write a run on Black Panther for Marvel, for like twenty seconds. It sounds like the kind of joke somebody would make to illustrate why Marvel is so much better than DC. BUT IT IS REAL.

Strunk and White, grammar cops.

  • I’ve been nerding out over the Hamilton cast recording since it started streaming earlier this week and it’s everything I could possibly ask for.

Such an excellent round-up that I will be late for work, because I kept clicking on the links. I am still giggling over The Toast, and trying to figure out which Tolkien book included incest.

But oh gods the comments on some of those pieces made me sad & mad in about equal parts. So much ugliness and ego instead of real engagement or discussion.

    • Hahahaha, I don’t think any of the Tolkien books did! I think they’re thinking of the many Tolkien knock-offs we’ve loved slash endured over the years in high fantasy. Frankly incest is almost always a deal-breaker for me in continuing to read a book. Ick.

The comments — yeah. I never read the comments. The bad possible outcomes of reading the comments are way more numerous than the good. :p

I’m having a hard time remembering to use the preferred pronoun for one of my students this semester because it’s plural, and when I’m at work–where for 20 years I’ve been expected to be a paragon of grammatical virtue–it’s almost impossible for me to refer to a singular person out loud by a plural pronoun. I have apologized for this and asked “them” to be patient with me while I try to get it right.
The Strunk and White is a hoot!

    • Yeah, see, and that’s I think how most people respond when they suddenly are asked to start using a new name (like a married name). It doesn’t have to be a big issue for anyone. You are being awesome AS USUAL.

The Strunk and White is maybe my favorite. It would be my clear favorite if the Hamilton cast recording didn’t exist. 😀

Now that I’m listening to the Hamilton songs I see why you were so enthusiastic here…I thought I didn’t have time, but I should have listened, and by now I’d have all these songs memorized!

  • I always enjoy checking out your links!

    • Thanks! You should definitely definitely listen to the Hamilton soundtrack while it’s still streaming for free!

  • Wow, Hamilton is pretty much the greatest thing EVER!
